Men's Lacrosse Routs Crusaders

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's lacrosse team scored five seconds into the game on Sunday afternoon and never looked back, breezing past the University of Dallas Crusaders, 18-3.

After a dominant win on Friday night, the Spartans picked up right where they left off on Sunday. Josh Berry-Wingate won the opening faceoff and went straight down the field to score all by himself and give the Spartans a 1-0 lead five seconds into the game. UD would end up scoring six goals in the first period and five in the second to put the game out of reach at halftime with an 11-2 lead. The lead allowed every healthy Spartans to see playing time for the second straight game. 

Eight different Spartans scored on Sunday afternoon, five of which had more than one goal. Matt Penalvert kept pelting the Crusaders defense with shots, getting off 23 shots and scoring five goals to lead the Spartans. Michael Jango and Josh Berry-Wingate both recorded hat tricks with three goals a piece while Tyson Svoboda and Michael Julius both came up with two goals. Brandon Jagitsch was dominant in the faceoff cirlce, winning 17 of 19 and grabbed seven ground balls as well. UD won 21 of 25 total faceoffs, which was the second best performance this season after winning 23-26 at Northland College.  

The UD offense fired off a season high 66 shots in the match, topping the previous best of 61 earlier this season against Concordia-Chicago. With how the Spartans were rolling offensively, it helped their defense limit the Crusaders to just nine total shots. Both of UD goalies saw action, Kyle Mullins played the first three quarters before giving way to Sam Kopecky in the fourth quarter, both combined for one save as Dallas was only able to muster four shots on goal, three of which found the back of the net. 

The Spartans travel to Rock Island, Illinois on Wednesday to take on Augustana College at 7:00 p.m before returning home on Saturday, April 8th against North Central Universtiy.
