Spartans Stifled by Duhawks

DUBUQUE, Iowa- The University of Dubuque men's basketball team suffered a road loss, to their conference and crosstown rival Loras College on Saturday evening, 58-87.

After the Spartans dominated the first matchup between these two teams back on December 3rd with a 96-78 win, the Duhawks returned to favored this time around, this time in their home gym. UD fell behind 3-19 in the first five minutes of the game and everytime they tried to make a run to get back in the game, the Duhawks answered with another run of their own. The Spartans could not find themselves tonight shooting as they were just 17-64 (26.6%) from the field and 8-28 from three, while Loras was 23/57 (40.4%) and 13-30 from three. Another big difference in the game came from the free throw line were the Spartans were just 16-31 from the free throw line while the Duhawks were able to convert on 28 of 33 from the charity stripe. 

11 different Spartans scored on Saturday evening, led by Jamaree Atwater with 11 points and Marcus McDaniel with nine. UD big man, Jake Weber was not quite himself tonight as he only had five points and three rebounds, but Weber is still tied for second in NCAA Division III with 13 double-doubles in 16 games. The Spartans were able to force the Duhawks into 15 turnovers with 8 steals, whiling also converting off Duhawk those mistakes with 17 points off turnovers. Zach Randolph and Jamaree Atwater both had a hand in those 8 steals, as they both collected two steals. 

The Spartans will look to rebound on Monday night as the Luther Norse come to Dubuque, tip is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. The game was previously scheduled for January 16th but was postponed until January 23 because of weather. UD also hosts Central College on Wednesday night and Buena Vista on Saturday afternoon.
