Volleyball Rallies to Win Five Set Thriller

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Volleyball rallied from an 0-2 deficit to upend Buena Vista 3-2 (23-25,19-25,25-17,25-23,15-9).

The first two sets for the Spartans did not go as planned as they dropped both of them in close sets. The Spartans came storming out in the third set to take it 25-17 and give them momentum. UD powered ahead for a big lead in set four and was able to hold off Buena Vista’s late rally to even things up at two sets a piece. Just like the previous two sets, the Spartans set the tone right away and grabbed the lead, one they would not relinquish to give them the 3-2 comeback victory in front of a spirited home crowd. 

Karrah Davis and Kendall Kaufmann help power the offensive attack for the Spartans as Davis had 18 kills and Kauffman had 15. Anna Grace and Anna Runge both added seven kills as well.  Once again the Spartans were everywhere on defense as they had 63 digs and eight team blocks. Jenna Runde had 17 digs, Johanna Steggall with 15, while Kendall Kaufman, Karrah Davis, Alyssa Cose and Meagan Albon all had at least 6. Anna Runge led the way at the net with the blocks with three solo’s and one assist, while Anna Grace had one solo and four assists on blocks.

"This win was a total team effort, and so much fun," commented coach April Elsbernd. "We had to make a few changes in the line-up and they responded incredibly well, staying focused and working through adversity.  This group is full of fighters, and I couldn’t be more proud of the effort we’ve put in so far this season.  Although there have been matches that haven’t gone our way, they refuse to give up." 

The Spartans travel to Illinois Wesleyan on October 11th at 2:00 p.m., before returning hom for a match against Augustana College at 7:30 on October 18th.
