Hanus & Hookstead Named Academic All-America

TOWSON, MARYLAND - University of Dubuque seniors Wyatt Hanus (Traer, Iowa/North Tama) and Miles Hookstead (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) have been named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Division III Football Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Hanus was selected to the first team while Hookstead made the second team. The Spartans finished the season tied for second place in the Iowa Conference. UD outscored the opposition 124-68 over the final three games of the season to finish on a three game winning streak.
An accounting and business marketing double major with a 3.85 grade point average; Hanus was also a finalist for the Gagliardi Trophy. The 2012 Iowa Conference MVP, he is a four-time Academic All-Iowa Conference award winner (3-Football, 1-Basketball), two-time First Team Capital One Academic All-District, and Second Team Academic All-America in 2011. Hanus recently played in the D3 Senior Classic in Salem, Virginia, finishing with 187 yards passing on 13-21 attempts with two touchdowns and no interceptions.
Hanus completed 258 of 390 passes for 3165 yards and 27 touchdowns this season. He ranks sixth among all Division III quarterback in passing yards (3165), ninth in yards per game (316.5), tenth in completions per game (25.8), and 29th in passing efficiency (153.58). He concludes his time at UD as the school’s career leader in passing yards (8,394), completions (670) and touchdowns (82). Hanus is currently the DIII career leader among all active quarterbacks in passing efficiency at 162.76. He also ranks third in completion percentage (67.75), fourth in yards (8,394), fourth in passing touchdowns (82), and seventh in completions (989).
Hookstead, a 2011 First Team Capital One Academic All-America honoree, is a Health, Wellness, and Recreation major with a 3.76 grade point average. Hookstead finished the season with 45 catches for 585 yards and 5 touchdowns. He is a two-time First Team Academic All-District selection as well as five-time Academic All-Iowa Conference (3-Football and 2-Basketball). A four year starter at tight end, Hookstead finished fourth all-time at UD with 18 receiving touchdowns. He is also seventh in catches with 133 and ninth with 1,474 receiving yards. Also a member of the Men’s Basketball team, Hookstead is a key reserve for the 8-1 Spartans.
The past two seasons, UD has had six student-athletes chosen Academic All-America and eight named to the Academic All-District team. In 2011, the Spartans were the only team in all divisions of the NCAA to have three football players named First Team Academic All-America. UD also led the IIAC in Academic All-Conference honorees with 16 in 2011 and 2012.
