Several of you have inquired about whether I have any plans to offer remarks on the recent events in our nation’s capital or whether I will have words to share on the occasion of Martin Luther King Jr. Day this coming Monday, January 18, 2021. As I consider a response, I am reminded of a story told by Fred Craddock, a homiletician whom I greatly admire, about an Arapaho-Cheyenne native woman named Molly Shepherd. On the occasion of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Ms. Shepherd wrote, “Molly has no words for you today. Molly has nothing to write today. Molly has no words today. Molly goes through the house all day saying, ‘Oh...” Ms. Shepherd’s response, devoid of words, were the best remarks of all.

Local Organizations Awarded Major Grant To Help Dane County Churches Thrive

In close partnership with three regional ministries, the Wisconsin Council of Churches has received a grant of $999,990 from Lilly Endowment Inc. to establish Awaken Dane. The program is funded through Lilly Endowment’s Thriving Congregations Initiative. The aim of the national initiative is to strengthen Christian congregations so they can help people deepen their relationship with God, build strong relationships with each other, and contribute to the flourishing of local communities and the world.

University of Dubuque Announces 2020 Faculty Hall of Fame Inductees

University of Dubuque announced today, Thursday, April 30, the recipients of the 2020 Faculty Hall of Fame for Excellence in Teaching and Advising. Ken Turner Jr., associate professor of science education, received the 2020 John Knox Coit Prize. He was an adjunct for a few years at UD before he started as a full-time assistant professor in 2015. The Rev. Beth McCaw, associate professor of ministry, received the 2020 William Lomax Award. She joined UD in 2004 as a seminary pastor to students. In 2017, McCaw became an associate professor.

UD's Michael Joseph won the Cliff Harris Award in 2017, he was the first Division III student-athlete to be honored with the award and remains the only Division III nominee to have claimed the trophy.

Debra Stork, PhD, director of teaching and learning, director of assessment and program review, and professor of education, received the 2019 John Knox Coit Prize. William “Bill” Karkow, MD, academic director of the physician assistant (PA) program, received the 2019 William Lomax Award.

The University of Dubuque softball team needed a sweep to help secure a spot in the 2019 American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) Tournament which begins next weekend. UD would rally back in both games against the Nebraska Wesleyan University Prairie Wolves to collect the weekend sweep, winning game one by a 2-1 score and the nightcap 8-4.
