Volleyball Splits At Opening Day of Augsburg Invitational

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The University of Dubuque volleyball team won their sixth straight match to begin the season against George Fox, before falling to UW-La Crosse in the nightcap in a five-set thriller for their first loss of the season.

The Spartan volleyball squad continued to roll in the first match of the Augsburg Imvitational against George Fox, sweeping the opening game of the tournament 25-16, 29-27, 25-19. UD led for a majority of all three matches, with reigning A-R-C MVP, Kara Wright leading the UD attack, finishing with a team-high 10 kills.

Four other Spartans had at least four kills, with Grace Hintze and Sarrah Farraday both finishing with seven kills each. UD produced six service aces, while they held George Fox without one ace.

In the nightcap, UW-La Crosse jumped out to a quick 1-0 set lead, before UD regrouped and rattled off wins in the next two sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-16. UW-La Crosse would force a fifth and deciding set, which was a back and fourth battle until UW-La Crosse scored five of the final six points to take the set and match and hand UD their first loss.

Kara Wright and Grace Hintze each had 14 kills during the night game against UW-La Crosse to lead the UD offense. Kate Messino assisted on 30 of UD’s 49 total kills and Grace Strawser dug up 34 UW-La Crosse attacks for a team-high.

The Spartans play two more matches on Saturday at the Augsburg Invitational at 12:30 and 5:30 p.m.
