Spartans Complete Season Sweep of BVU

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque women’s basketball team picked up their second win in three games after taking down Buena Vista on the road, 74-66.

The Spartan offense came out firing on all cylinders, connecting on 12-21 (57.1%) of field goals in the first quarter to race out to a  26-17 lead after the opening quarter. UD would score the first six points of the second quarter to push their lead all the way to 15 before the offense went cold. The Spartans went on a five minute drought from the 8:30 mark to 3:30 mark in the second, however, the UD defense stepped up to keep the Beavers from getting any closer than eight points. Behind 11 first half points from Lauren Griffith and seven Spartans scoring in all, UD took a 43-31 lead into the break. 

UD began the second half the same way they opened the first and jumped out to their largest lead of the game of 16 at the 6:53 mark of the third quarter. Every time the Beavers looked as if they were going to go on a run, the Spartans had an answer and held a 15 point lead with 2:58 remaining in the game to avoid any drama. 

All five Spartan starters scored at least 10 points, with Griffith leading the way with 13 after scoring 11 in the first half. Alli Bailey added 12, Josie Thomas with 11 and Miah Smith and Kathleen Mathias eached pitched in 10. 

The Spartans dominated in nearly every category on Saturday afternoon. UD outshot the Beavers, 46.% to 33.3%, outrebound BVU 40-38, 30-22 on the defensive glass, all while holding the lead for 35:37.
