DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque men’s lacrosse team got off to a hot start on Thursday night, but were slowed for the final three quarters in a 12-8 loss to Northwestern St. Paul.

Both offense’s came out blazing but it was the Spartans striking first when Joey Maniaci got UD on the board 3:26 into the game for the game’s first goal. Three minutes later, the Eagle struck back but it only took 90 seconds for UD to get that goal back thanks to Gavin Hughes. It took all of 40 seconds for Tanner Weis to add another goal for the Spartans for the 3-1 lead with 6:23 to play in the first period.

Back-to-back Northwestern goals pulled the Eagles back even at 3-3 but with 15 seconds left in the first quarter, Andrew Wagner took a Tanner Weis pass and fired it into the back of the net to go ahead 4-3. However, the Eagles would win the ensuing faceoff and race down the field for a buzzer beating goal to end the first quarter all even at 4-4.

The two teams would alternate the first four goals of the season, making it 6-6 with 11:03 to play before half, however, the Eagles would rattle off four straight goals to send UD into halftime trailing 10-6.

The scoring slowed down in the second quarter, with no team scoring for the first 14 minutes of the third quarter, until the Spartans got a buzzer beater of their own at the hands of Noah Reilly-Hughes. Weis got his second goal of the contest at the 6:11 mark of the fourth quarter to pull UD back within two goals, but UD would not be able to find the back of the net again and fell 12-8.

Tanner Weis and Gavin Hugh each recorded two goals on a combined 19 shots against the Eagles. UD split time in the net with Ryan Nemeth getting the start and stopping three shots, while Ryan Gartner Played the second half and grabbed four saves.

Even in the loss, UD outshot Northwestern by a 41-36 margin, but Northwestern’s goalkeeper would record a staggering 17 saves to UD’s seven.
