Tim and Carol Mauermann

Opposites Attract

Carol (Silveria) Mauermann (C'90) was a junior at University of Dubuque when she met the man who would become her husband, Tim Mauermann (C'91), in Aitchison Hall.

As a freshman, Tim would frequently study for physics class in Aitchison Hall with a bunch of friends. The two eventually met through mutual friends in the residence hall and began their UD Love Story.

Before coming to UD, Tim and Carol had very different backgrounds. Tim was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, surrounded by a large extended family. Carol, on the other hand, grew up in a small military family and was stationed overseas most her childhood. Tim and Carol were not the only ones in their families to attend University of Dubuque. Carol's father, Walter Silveria, was a 1986 University of Dubuque Theological Seminary graduate, and Tim's sister-in-law, Cheryl (Kimball) Mauermann, graduated in 1990.

Although the two had different backgrounds, the couple found commonalities at UD and both participated in campus ministry, athletics, and Greek Life. Carol was a Gamma Phi Delta, involved with Alpha Phi Omega, and a member of the softball and tennis teams. Tim was a Mu Sigma Beta and on the wrestling team.

Carol graduated in 1990 after majoring in special education, while Tim graduated in 1991 after studying mathematics and computer science. The year following his graduation, Tim and Carol returned to UD to visit some friends and that is when Tim decided to ask Carol a very important question. Wanting to surprise Carol, Tim put the engagement ring in the prize packet inside a box of Cracker Jacks. She was certainly surprised and so excited to say "Yes"!

The two became husband and wife on October 31, 1992, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Dubuque, Iowa. It was a candlelit ceremony presided over by Carol's father, Walt, and then campus minister, Kurt Pasko. Several UD friends were in their wedding party: Stacy (Droessler) Wilhite (C'91), Clare (Mulhausen) Ferguson (C'91), Jerome Korthals (C'91), Cheryl (Kimball) Mauermann (C'90), Tonia Ricke (C'93), and Mark Williams (C'92). Other UD alums who helped celebrate their special day were James Bass (C'91), Kirsten (Krause) Dale (C'90), John Downing (C'95), Celina (Malloy) Peerman (C'92), Eric Meyer (C'89), Karla Voss (C'91), and Tom Winter (C'91).

Following the ceremony, the newlyweds and their family and friends traveled by Trolleys of Dubuque to Bellevue, Iowa, for a Halloween costume reception. The following winter, they went skiing in Park City, Utah for their honeymoon.

Tim and Carol have moved several times since their wedding, both for employment and graduate school requirements for Carol. They have lived in Dubuque, Iowa; Madison, Wisconsin; St. Louis, Missouri; Washington, D.C.; Des Moines, Iowa; and Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The couple currently reside in Anthem, Arizona, where Tim is a technology manager for Wells Fargo and Carol is a School Psychologist serving pre-k through eighth grade students.

In his free time, Tim enjoys backpacking trips with
scouts, hiking in places such as the Grand Canyon and Paria Canyon, and building miniature railroad sets. He was a volunteer wrestling coach at the Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind for several years when Carol was employed as the School Psychologist. Carol enjoys spending time outdoors and reading. She volunteers with Love Without Boundaries, a non-profit organization that serves orphaned and impoverished children in several countries including China and Cambodia. Carol has been fortunate to have had several opportunities to provide teacher trainings in both countries.

Tim and Carol built their family through adoption. Their daughter Emma, 17, was born in Yangzhou, China, and their son Nicholas, 15, was born in Xi'an China. The Mauermann family enjoys traveling and hanging out in the great outdoors. They are looking forward to a family trip to Europe this summer.
