Volleyball Splits At Day One Of River City Classic

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque volleyball team hosted the River City Classic on Friday afternoon, splitting the first two matches with a 3-1 (25-21, 30-32, 14-25, 21-25) loss to UW-Stout, before ending the night with a 3-2 (25-17, 25-23, 17-25, 20-25, 15-13)  win over UW-Oshkosh.

The Spartans opened the afternoon taking on UW-Stout, where UD would jump out to the early lead in the set and rolled to a 25-21 opening set win. UD would get the early lead in the second set before UW-Stout began their push and evened the score by the middle of the set. The two teams traded points and took the second set past the limit, where UW-Stout would win it 32-30. UW-Stout would take the third set with a score of 25-14 to move ahead two sets to one. UW-Stout and UD would play another tight set in the third, however,  UW-Stout would take the set 25-21 to claim the match, 3-1.

Grace Hintze led the Spartans against UW-Stout with 11 kills, while Shauna McAleer and Kara Wright each had nine. Grace Strawser led the Spartans with 22 digs and McAleer had two solo blocks and three block assists to go with her nine kills.

The nightcap featured ties at 33 different points and 13 different lead changes in a five set thriller in which the Spartans would come out ahead in. UD would grab the first two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-23 to take a commanding 2-0 lead. UW-Oshkosh would crawl their way back into it by grinding out wins in the next two sets to force a deciding fifth set. The Spartans jumped out to a big lead in the fifth set, which UW-Oshkosh would pull back within even once, before UD pulled away once again to take the set 15-13 without ever trailing in the set.

Three different Spartans reached double figures in kills in the win over the Titans. Hintze once again led the team with 15, followed by Wright with 14 and Hawtrey with 13. As a team, the Spartans finished with a hitting percentage of .161. The UD defense had eight solo blocks against UW-Oshkosh, with Rylee Andresen setting the tone with four of her own.

The River City Classic continues on Saturday with five games in total beginning at noon in the Stoltz Sports Center.
