Volleyball Opens 2019 Without Losing a Set

WINONA, Minn. - The University of Dubuque volleyball opened their 2019 campaign without losing s set on Friday after sweeping past Macalester and St. Mary's in straight sets 3-0.

In the opener, UD won 25-16, 25-19, 25-10 over Macalester College and were led offensively by Kara Wight who finished with 13 kills and a .379 hitting percentage. Darby Hawtrey added 11 kills of her own. Kate Messino led with 31 set assists. Hanna Horsfield set the mark in serving with four service aces.  Grace Strawser ended the season opener with a team high 13 defensive digs with Wright collecting 11.  As a team UD blocked seven attacks up front.

In the nightcap, UD swept past the hosts St. Mary's University 25-16, 25-22, 25-12 to improve 2-0 on the season. Hawtrey led the Spartans offense with 13 kills and a hitting percentage of .407. Messino grabbed 22 set assists and Strawser had three service aces and led UD with 21 defensive digs. 

The Spartans continue action on Saturday and will be looking to keep their win streak alive.
