Box Score

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque men’s soccer team gave the 9th ranked Luther College Norse all they could handle in the first round of the American Rivers Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon, where they fell with 15 seconds left in double overtime, 3-2.

UD 2,  Luther 3 (2OT)

How It Happened
-Defense was the main story of the first half, the teams combined for no goals, just three shots on goal and 10 shots total. Luther had the edge in both with two on net and seven total shots.
-Luther peppered UD goalie Brandon White in the opening few minutes of the second half, firing off back-to-back shots in the 49th minute but White managed to save both. However, in the 53rd minute, Luther’s Ben Sizelove sent a laser of a shot from just outside the 18, which snuck past a diving White for the game’s first goal.
-The Spartans did not take long to respond. In the 58th minute, Andrew Guelle placed a perfect free kick into the box that rattled around before it found Gloire Luwara, who put it home to get the game back to even at 1-1 with his team-high eighth goal of the seaon.
-Just a minute later, Luwara was inches from his second goal in as many minutes as he outraced everyone on the right side of the field, slipping a shot past the Luther goalie but a Luther defender was right there to kick it away at the goal line.
-Luwara finally did get his second goal of the day as Axel Aaman chipped a perfect pass into the box from 20 yards out and Luwara headed it into the net right before the Luther goalie was able to grab it to give the Spartans their first lead of the day at 2-1 in the 79th minute.
-The UD lead only lasted a minute as Luther responded with a perfect pass and close range goal of their own to pull back even with 10 minutes remaining in the second half. The game remained tied at 2-2 through the 90 regulation minutes, sending it to overtime.
-After neither team scored in the first overtime, we went into the second overtime, where the Spartans almost won it with a header from Johnny Kraemer off of a corner but a diving save by Luther’s goalie kept the game going.
-With 15 seconds left in regulation, Luther had a corner kick of their own and their header was the one to find the back of the net for the golden goal, ending the game, 3-2 in favor of Luther.
