Volleyball Goes Perfect at Sugar Loaf Classic

WINONA, Minn. - The University of Dubuque volleyball team went 4-0 this weekend at the St. Mary’s sugar Loaf Classic to begin the 2019 season on a high note. 

The Spartans took on UW-River Falls in game three of the tournament and the opening game of Saturday. UD got off to a slow start during the 10 a.m., dropping their first set of the season in the opening set, 14-25. UD bounced back in a big way, taking the second and third sets by scores of 25-19 and 25-23. The Spartans carried that momentum over to the fourth set, in which they fell behind 5-1, but quickly made up that ground and stormed ahead to cruise to a 25-19 set win and 3-1 match win. 

UD had a trio of Spartans in Kara Wright, Darby Hawtrey and Grace Hintze with 10 kills. Rylee Andresen was not far behind with eight kills, while Kate Messino fed the attackers with 35 assists. As a team, UD came away with a hitting percentage of .120.

UD completed the perfect 4-0 weekend with a 3-1 (25-23, 20-25, 25-17, 25-13) over UW-Superior. In the win over Superior, Darby Hawtrey powered the UD attack with a team-high 14 kills. Sarah Farrafay pitches in 12 kills, while Rylee Andresen added 10 kills of her own. For the game, the UD offense hit .185.

The Spartans will have thier 2019 home opener on Wednesday against Augustana College at 7:30 p.m. in the Stoltz Sports Center. Prior to the contest, we will honor the 2018 American Rivers Conference Tournament Champion team with a ring ceremony.
