DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque Spartans wrestling team finished up non-conference action with a 27-16 dual win over Wheaton College Thunder on Saturday.
Aaron Black got things underway with a bang, pinning Wheaton's Brendan Johnston in 87 seconds to get UD out to a 6-0 lead. Wheaton would pick up seven team points over the next two matches to quickly erase the UD lead, giving Wheaton a 7-6 advantage. Greg Krulas ended Wheaton's breif run with a fall of his on, this one coming in 4:03. Jessy Diaz followed Krulas' pin with a pin of his own midway through the third period. After Zarik Anderson picked up a forfeit at 157, the Spartans led 27-7.
Wheaton would take the matches at 174, 184 and 197, however all those were regular decisions and the Spartans had the match sealed at 24-16 heading into the final match. Freshman Darryl Aiello continues to impress as he added a 6-5 decision over Wheaton's Grant Miller to his resume and to cap the match at 27-16 in favor of UD.
The Spartans were also supposed to take on American Rivers Conference foe, Nebraska Wesleyan, but the Prairiewolves were unable to make it due to the winter storm and that match will be rescheduled for a future date.
UD will travel to the American Rivers Conference duals on January 25, the Central Dutch will play host in Pella, Iowa for one half of the league (Buena Vista University, Central College, University of Dubuque, and Wartburg College), while the Nebraska Welseyan University will host the other half in Lincoln, Nebr. (Coe College, Loras College, Simpson College, Luther College, and Nebraska Wesleyan University).
