Women's Basketball Falls at Home to Dutch

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque women’s basketball team could not find their shot on Wednesday night and fell to the Central Dutch, 59-46.

Both teams worked the ball into the post to begin the game, with five of the first six combined made baskets coming from inside the paint as Central jumped out to an early 8-4 lead. The Spartans get it back to even for the first time after a Jaden Kelley layup and free throwt, however, Central responded with a layup and free throw of their own to close out the first quarter with a 14-11 lead over UD.

An Alli Bailey and-one layup 50 seconds into the second quickly evened things up at 14 all, but the Spartan offense went cold over the final nine minutes of the quarter. A quick 7-0 burst Dutch put them ahead 21-14 and the run would continue as the Spartans would score just five points over the final 9:10 of the half and fell behind 29-19 after the opening 20 minutes of play.

Central opened the second half with a layup to move ahead 12 points, their biggest lead to that point, but the Spartans responded with seven unanswered points of their own to climb back within five points. The quarter of runs continued as the Dutch answered back with a 7-0 run of their own to push the UD deficit right back to 12.

Early in the fourth, the Spartans clawed their way back within six points after a 6-0 run over a 1:50 span, however, that was a close as the Spartans were able to get.

Tabria Thomas and Kathleen Mathias led the Spartans with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Mimi Smith was everywhere on the glass, hauling a game-high 12 rebounds. The Spartans and Dutch each had 30 points in the paint, but the Spartans could not get a shot to fall from outside, going 1-12 from three, while Central hit six three-pointers.

The Spartans defense did limit the Dutch to 37.5% shooting from the field and forced 26 turnovers,

The Spartans will head down the road on Saturday to take on rival Loras College at 2 p.m.
