Volleyball Finishes River City Classic With A 2-2 Mark

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque volleyball team wrapped up the River City Classic on Saturday, taking down Carroll 3-1, before falling to UW-Stevens Points, 3-1.

In the opening match of the second and final day of the River City Classic, UD took on the Carroll Pioneers, where Carroll would waste little time by taking the opening set 25-21. The Spartans would even the match up at one set all fairly quickly, cruising to a set two win of 25-18 behind five Kara Wright kills. UD fell behind 16-10 in the third set, but a quick rally would get them back within one point at 16-15 before grabbing the lead a 21-20. The set went into extra points with the teams all square at 25, but back-to-back kills for UD gave them the set and 2-1 lead. In the fourth set, it was UD who jumped ahead 16-10. The Pioneers would get back within one point at 19-18 but the Spartans would score six of the final seven points to take the set and match.

Against the Pioneers, Kara Wright and Grace Hintze each led the team with 15 kills, combining for 30 of UD’s 50. Hanna Horsfield and Shauna McAleer each came away with three solo blocks and Wright was right behind them with two of her own.

In the afternoon and final game of the classic, UD fell behind to UW-Stevens Point by five points early before tying it up at 17 all. However, the Pointers would regain the momentum to take the opening set, 25-19. UD scored the first point of the second set and never looked back during the set, getting a lead as big as eight at 20-12 before taking the set 25-21 to even the match. The teams would continue to trade sets as the Pointers took the third set 25-20 to put UD’s backs against the wall. Neither team wanted to give in during the fourth set, both teams coming up with rallies of their own to force the set into extra points, where the Pointers would get the first two to win the set 27-25 and the match 3-1. In the fourth set alone, there were eight ties and four lead changes.

Kara Wright was her typical self and led UD in kills with 16. Not far behind her was Darby Hawtrey with 12 and Grace Hintze with 10. Grace Strawser helped the back end of the defense out with a team-high 18 digs and Rylee Andresen protected the net with three solo blocks.

The Spartans hop right back into conference action on Tuesday when they host Luther at 7:30 p.m. in the Stoltz Sports Center.
