FINALISTS ANNOUNCED FOR DUANE SCHROEDER IIAC SCHOLAR-ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARDS
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa --- The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today the five male and five female finalists for the 2011-2012 Duane Schroeder IIAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards.
Receiving nominations for this year's men's award are former Coe College baseball player Scott DeAngelis, former University of Dubuque football player Michael Zweifel, former Loras College cross country and track & field athleteDan McDermott, former Luther College tennis player Scott Sundstrom and former Wartburg College football player Robby Salmon.
Each Iowa Conference institution may nominate one male and one female student-athlete for consideration. The Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year are selected from among the finalists by a vote of the IIAC Faculty Athletic Representatives. This year's winners will be released Thursday, January 3 at www.iowaconference.com.
About the Duane Schroeder IIAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award
The Duane Schroeder IIAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards were first presented in December 2001 for the 2000-01 academic year. To be eligible for nomination, a student-athlete shall have graduated or exhausted their athletic eligibility during the academic year for which the award is given. The nominee must have demonstrated a high level of accomplishment and achievement in a varsity sport, have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale), and show evidence of scholarly achievements, community service involvement and leadership.
About Duane Schroeder
The Duane Schroeder IIAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year is named in honor of the late Duane Schroeder, former sports information director at Wartburg College. Schroeder served as Wartburg’s SID for 43 years until his retirement in 2000. Upon his retirement from his sports information duties, he was named SID Emeritus and served as Wartburg’s News Director until 2001. During much of his four decades at Wartburg, Schroeder served as the IIAC’s information director and secretary/treasurer.

MEN’S NOMINEES
Scott DeAngelis * Coe College * Baseball * Clinton, Iowa / Clinton
DeAngelis was a two-time all-Iowa Conference selection (2012-first team; 2011-second team) for the Kohawks, contributing to the program's two most successful seasons in terms of victories (32 in 2011; 29 in 2012). A second baseman with a .311 career average, he ranks seventh all-time at Coe in stolen bases (33) and at-bats (498) and tenth in hits (155) and runs (107).
An economics and business administration major with a minor in mathematics, DeAngelis was a 2012 CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-America as well as a three-year member of the Iowa Conference All-Academic Team. He graduated with honors and was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi (all disciplines), Omicron Delta Epsilon (economics) and Sigma Beta Delta (business, management or administration) honor societies.
Michael Zweifel * University of Dubuque * Football * Whitewater, Wis. / Whitewater
Zweifel was a two-time all-America selection who rewrote the record book for wide receivers in just two-plus seasons as a Spartan. He was awarded the Gagliardi Trophy in 2011, presented to the most outstanding football player in Division III. This after a career that saw him set an NCAA all-divisions record with 463 career receptions and a Division III single-season mark with 140 catches in 2011. Zweifel also ranks second in career receiving yards across all divisions with 5,979. The 2011 Iowa Conference Offensive MVP, he graduated holding Iowa Conference records for receptions in a single game (20 vs. Simpson in 2009; subsequently broken), receiving yards in a single game (330 vs. Simpson in 2009), receptions in a season (105 in 2011) and receiving yards in a season (1,444 in 2011).
A health, wellness and recreation major who minored in coaching, Zweifel was named an NFF Scholar-Athlete as one of 16 finalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy. The Campbell Trophy, often referred to as the "Academic Heisman Award," is awarded to the player with the best combination of academics, community service and on-field performance. He was also a finalist for the AFCA Good Works Team and was the 2011 Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America(r) Team Member of the Year for Division III football. On campus, Zweifel was a 2010-11 Spartan Achievement Award winner as well as a Presidents Academic Student-Athlete Award winner. He also served as president of Dubuque's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Dan McDermott * Loras College * Cross Country / Track & Field * Cedar Rapids, Iowa / Xavier
McDermott was a two-time national qualifier in cross country who posted a runner-up finish at the 2011 Iowa Conference Cross Country Championships. He also earned all-region honors his senior year and, at the national meet, missed qualifying for all-America honors by six seconds. On the track, McDermott earned all-conference honors by placing third in the 5,000-meter run at the 2011 IIAC Championships.
A finance and management major, McDermott served his fellow student first as vice president of the junior class then as student body president as a senior. He was also a captain of the cross country (2010, 2011) and track & field (2012) teams. His senior year, McDermott was named Loras' management major of the year. He also served as Director of Recruitment for the Loras College Business Club. He was a three-year member of the Iowa Conference All-Academic Team.
Scott Sundstrom * Luther College * Tennis * Lino Lakes, Minn. / Centennial
Sundstrom was a three-time Iowa Conference MVP who earned ITA All-America honors during the 2010-2011 academic year after winning the ITA Midwest Regional doubles championship with Utsab Rijal. In 2010, he was also selected to participate in the singles draw at the NCAA Division III Championships. Sundstrom won three Iowa Conference Flight A individual titles in his career -- singles in 2009 (spring) and 2010 (fall) and doubles in 2010 (fall) with Ramesh Karki. Sundstrom, who played at No. 1 singles throughout his career, graduated with the second-most singles wins in school history. In 2012, he was one of four regional recipients of the ITA/Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship and Leadership Award.
A management and French double major, Sundstrom was a four-year ITA Scholar Athlete and a three-year member of the Iowa Conference All-Academic Team. A member of Phi Beta Kappa and Pi Delta Phi (French) honor societies, he also received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and the Henry O. Talle Award (Luther College business department honors) in 2012.
Robby Salmon * Wartburg College * Football * Mason City, Iowa / Mason City
Salmon was a three-time all-Iowa Conference selection as a punter for the Wartburg football program. In his career, he averaged 41.5 yards per punt with a long of 74 yards his junior year. Of his 148 punts, 26 were of 50 yards or more and 51 left opponents starting drives inside their own 20-yard line. Salmon averaged 42.7 yards per punt his junior year, earning first team all-league honors and second-team all-region and honorable mention all-America plaudits from D3football.com.
A chemistry major, Salmon was a 2010 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District selection. He was also a three-year member of the Iowa Conference All-Academic Team, a recipient of the Regents and E.E. Zemke Chemistry Scholarships and was a member of the Phi Eta Sigma honor society.
