DUBUQUE, IOWA – The University of Dubuque Baseball team split the doubleheader against Loras College (17-16, 10-12) on Tuesday afternoon and wrapped up its four game series with an even 2-2 record. The Spartans and Duhawks also split on April 16th. UD won the opener 1-0 before falling in the second game, 8-5. Dubuque is now 10-22 overall and 8-16 in the Iowa Conference. The Spartans are one game out of the sixth and final spot in the upcoming IIAC Tournament that begins on May 9th.

Senior shortstop Andrew Danna (Antioch, Ill./Antioch) set a new school record for career games played with 149 in game two. He also tied the school record for career runs scored at 119 with his run scored in the ninth inning of game two.

Game 1: Dubuque-1, Loras-0 BOX SCORE
The Spartans jumped out to an early lead in the game with a run in the second inning and pitched their way out of multiple tough situations to take the win. Spencer Kuehn (Dana Point, Calif./Dana Hills) earned his third win of year with six strikeouts in five shutout innings. Josh Eastman (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) did not allow a hit over the final 1 1/3 innings to pickup the save.

UD scored the games only run in the second inning on a two out single by Aaron Laskowski (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton). Michael Riordan (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sac bunt. After a Dubuque strikeout, Laskowski singled up the middle to drive in Riordan for the eventual winning run.

Riordan reached base in each of his three at bats with a single, walk, and hit by pitch.

Kuehn pitched out of numerous tough situations as Loras left 10 runners on base over the first five innings of the game. Eastman lowered his ERA in conference only games to 1.80, the lowest in the IIAC.

Game 2: Dubuque-5, Loras-8 BOX SCORE
UD ran out of steam in game two as they needed five pitchers to finish the always tough midweek conference game. Loras took control of the game with a four run fifth inning. The Spartans did respond with three runs in the bottom of the ninth but it was too little too late.

Chris Briggs (Lombard, Ill./Montini) led the Spartans at the plate with three hits including a double to deep centerfield in the ninth. Kuehn and Laskowski each followed up strong game ones with two hits each in the nightcap.

The Spartans jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a run in the first. Nick Martin (Orland Hills, Andrew) started the rally with a bunt single and advanced to second on a single by Kuehn. With two outs, Riordan singled up the middle to score Martin.

After a Loras run in the second, Dubuque scored one in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. Austin Monfross (Big Timber, Mont./Sweet Grass) led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Monfross would advance to third on a ground ball and score on a wild pitch after getting a great jump on the ball in the dirt. Down 2-1, Loras would score four runs in the fifth, one in the seventh, and two in the eighth to take a 8-2 lead going into the ninth.

Showing a never quit attitude, UD was able to get the tying run to the plate but the rally fell short as the Spartans scored three runs on three hits. Laskowski started things with a single and advanced on a base on balls by Danna. Dubuque would load the bases when Michael Campbell (Clinton, Mo./Clinton) was hit by a pitch. Kuehn pushed across the first two runs of the inning for UD with a single to right field. With runners on first and second, Briggs welcomed the new Loras pitcher with a double to deep center that scored Campbell. The next two Spartan hitters were retired to end the game.

Landon Klostermann (Epworth, Iowa/Western Dubuque) pitched a hitless 1 1/3 innings of relief.
