UD Social Justice Class to Hold Debate

On Wednesday, May 8, 2013 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., the University of Dubuque Social Justice honors class will hold a debate in Blades Chapel. The intent of the debate is to provide illumination on two controversial topics. Students will engage in parliamentary style debating which involves alternating rounds and audience participation. The pubic is encouraged to attend this open event.
Two topics will be the focus of the May 8 debate - Title IX and gun control. Four students will debate each of the two topics – two arguing the affirmative, and two arguing the negative.
In the Title IX case, the affirmative argues that Title IX is no longer necessary in schools and institutions around America. Spencer Cooper, a first-year business administration major from Aplington, IA and Keynon Janicke, a first-year education in secondary English major from Forreston, IL will be arguing the affirmative. Haley Rusk, a first-year undecided major from DeWitt, IA and Kristen Field, a first-year student double majoring in English and secondary education from Fulton, IL will be arguing the negative.
The second debate focuses on current gun control measures being advanced by the President. Specifically, the affirmative is arguing that an assault weapon ban and a restriction to magazine capacities should be implemented. Shaniece Ruiz, a junior double majoring in sociology and criminal justice from Brooklyn, New York and Vincent Obah, a junior criminal justice major from Chicago, IL will be arguing the affirmative. Anna Stoeffler, a senior double majoring in criminal justice and sociology from Prairie du Chien, WI and Joseph McAndrew, also a double major in criminal justice and sociology from Lakenheath, England/Lancaster, WI will be arguing the negative.
