Spartans Named All-IIAC Softball

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today its All-Conference Teams and major awards for the 2013 softball season. Coe College junior Maddison Woodruff has been named the 2013 Iowa Conference Softball Pitcher of the Year, while Central senior catcher Caitlyn Meyer has been named the 2013 IIAC Softball Position Player of the Year. Bob Timmons, head coach of league co-champion Coe, received honors as the 2013 IIAC Softball Coach of the Year.

University of Dubuque junior catcher/outfielder Amber Meyer (Cascade, Iowa/Cascade) has been named First Team All-IIAC Utility Player. Meyer led the IIAC with an on-base percentage of .518. She also finished second in walks (21) and tied for fifth in batting average (.409). Meyer led the Spartans in batting average (.409), slugging percentage (.624), on-base percentage (.518), runs (25), hits (38), runs batted in (22), home runs (5), total bases (58), walks (21), and stolen bases (8). She was also one of only three Spartans to start all 34 games this season and has started 109 consecutive games.

A trio of Spartans earned Second Team All-IIAC with shortstop Shawna Dole (Dubuque, Iowa/Dubuque Senior) earning the honor for the third straight year. Susan Danielewski (Lansing, Ill./Thornton Fractional South) was named Second Team outfielder. Meggie Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) also earned Second Team Honors at second base.

Seniors Danielewski and Dole have left a major imprint on the UD Softball Record Book over the past four years. Danielewski leaves as the All-Time Career Leader in hits (145), home runs (11), RBI (65), and total bases (215). Dole is first on the All-Time Career Leaders list in runs (77) and assists (286). Danielewski finished the season with a .344 batting average (33-96), 15 runs scored, a team high seven doubles, two home runs, and started all 34 games. After missing multiple game on the spring trip, Dole responded in IIAC only games to hit .375 (15-40), score 14 runs, and posted a .490 on base percentage.

A three-sport performer, Schmidt has now earned all-conference recognition in Volleyball (Honorable Mention), Basketball (Honorable Mention), and Softball (Second Team) during the 2012-13 school year. After taking her freshman year off to concentrate on volleyball and basketball, Schmidt returned to the diamond this spring to hit .359 (28-78) with 16 runs scored, six doubles, a team best two triples, and 15 runs batted in.

The Spartans finished the 2013 season with a 16-18 record. UD played one of the toughest schedules in the nation with 13 of 34 games coming against teams that were regionally ranked in the final NCAA poll. UD was 4-9 in those games with three wins against #5 Simpson and one win against #2 Central. Dubuque won five games against teams that qualified for the NCAA Division III Playoffs with one win (5-3) against #2 seeded Central, one win (10-0) vs. #6 seeded Allegheny, and two wins (3-2, 4-2) on the road at #7 seeded Cornell.
