Spartans Lose Shootout 81-78

MADISON, WISCONSIN - The University of Dubuque Women's Basketball team came out firing in the 2013-14 opener on Saturday night at the Edgewood College Tipoff Classic. The Spartans lost the high scoring affair with UW-Platteville, 81-78. Jenna Kotas (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) led four Spartans in double figures with 20 points. UD led 40-35 at the half. 

The Spartans and Pioneers went back-and-forth in a first half that had eight lead changes and five tied game situations. UD opened up a 7-2 lead to start the game with Brittany Collier (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) opening the scoring with a layup. After a UWP jumper, Kotas answered with her first of three first half three-pointers and Kayla Springer (Altoona, Wis./Altoona) hit two free throws to give UD a five point lead. 

UD closed the first half with a 14-0 run over the last 3:20 to take a 40-35 lead at the break. Kotas sparked the run with eight points while Collier scored five points. Eight Spartans scored in the first half. 

In addition to scoring a team high 20 points, Kotas finished with seven rebounds in 31 minutes. Jessica Goetz (Sussex, Wis./Arrowhead) played well at both ends of the court with 11 points, eight rebounds (four offensive and four defensive), two assists, two blocks, and one steal. 

Dubuque opened up an eight point lead with 14:04 left in the second half before UWP went on a 10-0 run over the next 70 seconds to make a game of things. Platteville would eventually pull away late in route to a three point victory. 

Collier finished with 14 points on 4-6 shooting from the floor while also grabbing six rebounds. Springer scored 12 points while making six of seven free throws and pulled down a team high eight rebounds. Freshman Daneshia Snitker (Waukon, Iowa/Waukon) finished with eight points and six rebounds in her college debut. Fellow freshman Emily Brinker (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) had five points and six rebounds in her first game as a Spartan. 

The Spartans held a 12-6 advantage in fast break points and 26-15 lead in second change points. UD out rebounded UW-P 55 to 44 with the Spartans starting five combining for 32 of them. 

UP NEXT: Dubuque will play Edgewood College (0-1) on Sunday afternoon at 4:30 pm in the final game of the Edgewood Tipoff Classic.
