UD Hurdlers Named IIAC Performers of the Week

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) announced today that Loras basketball player Katie Langmeier and University of Dubuque basketball player Andre Norris (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) have been named IIAC Athletes of the Week for the week ending Sunday, January 19, 2014. The Conference also announced Performers of the Week in seven winter sports.

The University of Dubuque Track and Field program swept the IIAC Track & Field (Track) Performer of the Week awards with Evan Zurbuchen (Hollandale, Wis./Madison West) and Taylor Cary (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) earning the honor. Zurbuchen and Cary each won the 55m Hurdles at the Sol Butler Classic.

A senior captain, Zurbuchen ran away with the Men's 55m Hurdles posting the two fastest times of the day. In the prelims he finished with the fastest time of the meet at 8.01 seconds. He posted a time of 8.04 seconds in the finals to win by 0.13 seconds. After two weeks of competition, he has the fastest 60m Hurdles time in the IIAC at 8.61 seconds which ranks 50th in Division-III. 

Cary ran the two fastest times of the meet in the Women's 55m Hurdles on her way to victory. She ran an opening time of 8.80 seconds in the prelims to qualify first. The sophomore hurdler was even better in the finals with a time of 8.70 seconds to win by 0.11 seconds. Through two weeks on competition, she currently ranks third in the IIAC and 26th in NCAA Division-III for the 60m Hurdles. Cary also ran the final leg of the Women's 4x200m Relay team that finished second with a time of 1:49.63.

UP NEXT: UD will be at the Monmouth Midwest Individual on Saturday, January 25th. Select Spartans will also be traveling to the Nebraska Wesleyan University Invitational in Lincoln, Neb. on Friday January 24th to compete at the site of the 2014 NCAA Division-III Indoor Championships.
