Valcin Earns All-American Honors

Mar 14, 2014 | J.Crane

LINCOLN, NEBRASKA - University of Dubuque Spartan junior Rick Valcin (Catries, St. Lucia/Gros Islet) earned All-American honors in the Pole Vault at the 2014 NCAA Division-III Indoor Track & Field Championships. Valcin finished in second place due to tiebreaker rules after Valcin, Michael Bennett of the Univ. of Chicago, and Rob Rohe of UW-La Crosse all failed to clear 4.95m. As a result of all three competitors missing, the winner was decided by misses. Bennett earned the title of national champion having not missed before the final round. Valcin took second with one miss and Rohe came in third with two failed attempts. Valcin's height of 4.90m (16' - 0.75") was his fourth highest final jump of the year.

Valcin, Bennett, and Rohe all passed on the initial starting height of 4.45m before going a perfect three-for-three at 4.60m, 4.75m, and 4.85m. Rohe failed on his first two attempts at 4.90m before clearing the bar on his third attempt. Valcin missed his first attempt at 4.90m but was successful on his second attempt. Bennett cleared the bar on his first attempt in what eventually led to his title.

The runner-up finish by Valcin snapped an eight meet winning streak in the event. For the indoor season, Valcin finished with nine first place performances, one second place finish, and one no height. His performance at the UW-Platteville Final Qualifying Meet on March 7th of 5.10m (16' - 8.75") will finish the indoor season as the top height in Division-III.

As a team, UD was awarded eight points for Valcin's performance. He was the only UD qualifier at the 2014 NCAA D-III Indoor Track Championships.

RESULTS: NCAA Indoor Track Championships

UP NEXT: The Spartans begin the Outdoor Season on April 5th at the Wartburg Outdoor Select Meet.
