Spartans Fall to SUNY-Plattsburgh & Wooster

FORT MYERS, FLORIDA - The University of Dubuque and SUNY-Plattsburgh State Baseball teams scored early in the game and late in the game with little in between. The team combined for three runs in the first and five runs in the ninth as SUNY-P came out ahead 6-3 on Wednesday morning at the Gene Cusic Classic. UD returned to the diamond on Thursday against the College of Wooster, losing 12-1. UD is now 3-7 on the year with one game remaining on the spring trip.

The Spartans entered the ball game having won their last two games but were unable to capitalize on ten hits. Gaetano Florio (Youngtown, Ariz./Willow Canyon), Steve Ryan (Loveland, Colo./Mountain View), and Michael Salazar (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain) each had two hits for the Spartans. SUNY-PS started the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning. UD answered with a run after stringing together three singles in the innings. Will Fogel (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) and Ryan hit back-to-back one out singles to setup Salazar for a two out RBI. The score would stay 2-1 through six complete innings before SUNY-P added a run in the top of the seventh. Florio reached base in the second and fifth inning but was thrown out trying to move into scoring position with two outs in each inning. 

Plattsburgh State scored three insurance runs in the ninth to pull away. The Spartans did not let a five run deficit keep them from fighting to get back into the game as they scored two runs on three hits forcing a pitching change from SUNY-P. Pinch hitter Ryan Karrick (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) began things with a double and advanced to third on a single by Ryan. Freshman Austin McWhite (Orlando, Fla./Wekiva) continued the rally with a two run double with no outs in the inning. Salazar would record his second hit of the game before a double play ended the game at 6-3. 

Tyler Trifiletti (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) took the loss pitching four innings while allowing two earned runs on six hits. Jacob Padilla (Victorville, Calif./Victor Valley) went four innings in relief allowing only two hits and one unearned run.

UD squared off against the 2013 North Coast Athletic Conference Champions and NCAA Tournament qualifying College of Wooster Fighting Scots on Thursday morning. The two squads featured extremely different lineups with Wooster having six seniors and three juniors starting while Dubuque had two seniors and seven freshman in the lineup. Wooster scored in four straight innings to take a 12-0 lead after the fith while the majority of the damage coming in the seven run seventh inning. 

The Spartans broke-up the shutout in the sixth with one run on three straight singles. Karrick began the rally with and advanced to second on Daniel Casanova's (Lake Tapps, Wash./Auburn Riverside) single. Fogel followed with another single to score Karrick from second base. 

Dalton Garst (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago) hit a two-out double in the ninth for the only UD extra base hit. 

Alan Kopp (Verona, Wis./Verona) was the losing pitcher allowing six runs on seven hits. Dubuque held Wooster scoreless in the seventh through nine inning with Daniel Karnick (Winona, Minn./Cotter) pitching two innings and Reed Stumpf (Dubuque, Iowa/Hempstead) pitching the ninth. 

UP NEXT: The Spartans will return to the field on Friday morning against UMass-Boston. Game time is 9:00 am.
