WAVERLY, IOWA - The University of Dubuque Track and Field team set four school records in their first meet of the Outdoor Season at the Wartburg Select on Saturday. The UD men earned wins in a pair of field events with Rick Valcin (Catries, St. Lucia/Gros Islet) winning the pole vault and Jeremy Lawson (Lake Isabella, Calif./Kern Valley) winning the javelin. The UD women finished in eighth while the men took sixth.
In the first race of the day, the UD Women's 4x800m Relay team of Rachael Busjahn (Sobieski, Wis./Pulaski), Fabiola Ortiz (Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North), Kim Trinco (Schaumburg, Ill./JB Conant), and Kiersten Wenthold (Fort Atkinson, Iowa/South Winn.) finished with a time of 10:04.23 to best the previous record by seven seconds. Two throws records would also go down with Katelyn Herbig (Aurora, Ill./Aurora Central) breaking the hammer throw record at 40.04m (131'-4.0") and Amy Tranel (Hazel Green, Wis./Southwestern) setting a new javelin record at 32.88m (107'-10.0"). Iowa Conference triple jump champion Nickolette McKenzie (Hoffman Estates, Ill./William Fremd) took second place at 10.87m (35'-8.0"), ranking her 44th in Division-III.
Indoor NCAA Championships pole vault runner-up and Iowa Conference Champion, Valcin picked up right where he left off clearing a school record 5.0m (16'-4.75") in his first place performance. He also moved atop the Division-III Performance list with his height at Wartburg. Lawson earned the victory in the javelin with a toss of 55.71m (182'-9.0). The freshman thrower moved into second all-time at UD and into 23rd place this season in D-III. Kebba Bojang (Madison, Wis./Madison East) placed second in Triple Jump with a leap of 13.43m (44'-0.75").
