Men’s Soccer Team Overwhelms Coe in Win

Oct 4, 2014

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque men’s soccer team started slow but trounced all over Coe midway through the first half in 5-2 victory.

The Spartans’ (4-6-2, 2-1 IIAC) attack featured five different scorers and a 30-4 shot advantage on the night. Coe came into today’s game last in the Iowa Conference in shots attempted by a wide margin. Nevertheless, Andrew Guelle was the man of the hour after racking up one goal in the 68th minute, his second of the season, and one assist.

Coe (3-9, 0-3 IIAC) had no answer from the get-go after UD tallied a 16-1 shot advantage in the first half and 8-0 advantage in corner kicks. The Spartan scoring picked up in the 29th minute with a Jake Fahrenkrug score 10 yards out. Billy Belmonte got a piece of the action less than a minute later on Guelle assist from the left side.

Despite the chilly conditions, the Spartans were all warmed up for the second half as they struck quickly. Danny Daniels and Gonzalo Hernandez netted goals in the 50th and 53rd minutes, respectively, both unassisted. It was too little, too late for the Kohawks as they scored two times in the remaining minutes, sandwiching Guelle’s goal in the 68th.

Hernandez launched a game-high seven shots, including four on goal. The Spartan offensive dominated with an 18-4 advantage in the SOG department.

The Spartans improved their all-time record against Coe to 11-3-1. It is their second straight win in the series after a 2-1 victory a year ago.

The men’s team will hit the road to face North Central College (7-3-1, 1-0 CCIW) this Wednesday, October 8th at 5:00 pm.
