Command Sergeant Major Rick G. Ernst, United States Army and the Iowa Army National Guard is being awarded the Legion of Merit, second award, at a ceremony in the University of Dubuque Veteran Center on Friday, October 10, at 1:00 p.m. CSM Ernst recently retired and is receiving the award in recognition for his 31 years of services to Nation and State.  Presiding general officer will be Brigadier General Steven Altman, Deputy Commanding General for Maneuver, Iowa ARNG.  Other military officials in attendance include CSM Rachel Fails, State Command Sergeant Major Iowa ARNG; COL Timothy Rickert, Iowa ARNG G4; LTC Donald McLellan, Commander Sustainment Training Center; and CSM Allan Dahl, Command Sergeant Major Sustainment Training Center.

 

The Legion of Merit is eighth in the order of precedence of U.S. military decorations In the U.S. armed forces, the Legion of Merit is typically awarded to Army, Marine Corps, and Air Force general officers and colonels, and Navy and Coast Guard flag officers (admirals) and captains occupying command or very senior staff positions in their respective services. It may also be awarded to officers of lesser rank and senior enlisted personnel, but these instances are less frequent and warrant exceptional circumstances.
