Nevills 8th at Dr. Tucker Invite, Spartans 3rd Overall

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Payton Nevills and the Spartan men weathered a cold and windy day to finish third in an all-IIAC Dr. Tucker Invite hosted by Loras.

The Dubuque Soccer Complex laid claim to a four-team meet that included Loras, Simpson, and Coe. Loras took home the crown with a perfect score of 15 after sweeping the first 10 team scoring spots. They were followed by Simpson (76 points), University of Dubuque (86), and Coe (93).

Zach Baker of the Iowa Track & Field Club took home the individual title in 25:10.

Nevills became the first non-Loras team finisher after crossing the line in 11th place in a time of 27:09. It was the third time this season Nevills has led the Spartan harriers. His running mate and newly minted University of Dubuque Male September Student-Athlete of the Month, Alec Bass, crossed first in the other two meets. Bass clocked a 28:02 in 25th place with Jordan Murray right on his heels at 28:09 (28th ). Jack Lindsay represented runner number four at 28:37 (33rd) as Jonathan Berland complete the scoring with a time of 29:55 (49th).

It was a solid performance from the Varsity but it was freshman Joel Avila (30:54, 64th) who stole the show, at least for assistant coach Geoff Gundlach.

“Several underclassmen ran well in the 5-8 spots for our men’s team. But I was impressed with Avila tonight as he ran with toughness and confidence tonight to set a big PR (personal record). He has improved a tremendous amount this year and has both a great work ethic and is a fine teammate. I'm very happy for Joel tonight, he has earned this personal best."

Next up is the much anticipated Iowa Conference Cross Country Championships on November 1st at 11 a.m. hosted by Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa.
