Men’s Basketball Overwhelms North Central (Minn.) to Remain Undefeated

ROSEVILLE, Minn. – The University of Dubuque men’s basketball team used smothering defense and on-point shooting to defeat North Central University (Minn.), 68-57, on Friday in the Northwestern ACR Homes Tip-Off Classic.
The score was not indicative of the game flow after the Spartans broke the game open early in the second half. Sporting a 13-point lead at halftime, 35-22, the Spartans (3-0) opened up the flood gates with an 8-0 run induced by a pair of Gage Heffernan layups. North Central (0-3) would counter with four points of their own, but UD put the game away with an assertive 12-point run with 9:45 to go. With the Spartans up 28 points, the Rams clawed their way back to a nine-point deficit after a 19-0 run with 5:30 remaining. It was too little, too late as Sean Mulhern sank a pair of free throws with seconds remaining.
The Spartans struggled from 3-point land after a chilly 2-15 night, but would finish the game shooting 50% from the field while holding the Rams to a 32.3% shooting percentage. UD’s Andre Norris played a key part in it after recording his second double-double of the season with 17 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists on 7-of-9 shooting. The Spartans scored 46 of their 68 points in the paint and allowed just two second chance points to North Central.
Heffernan added 14 points and Brandon Ferguson scored 11 as 16 Spartans saw action and 10 of them scored in the victory. UD's bench finished with 15 points The Spartans face host University of Northwestern-St. Paul (0-1) tomorrow night at 7 p.m., before enjoying a short Thanksgiving break next week.
