PELLA, Iowa - The University of Dubuque captured a split against #13-ranked Central College Dutch on Friday afternoon. The contest originally scheduled for Wednesday, April 8, was postponed due to inclement weather the past two days in Iowa. The Spartans captured the opener 3-1 and lost the nightcap 3-8. A short rest and the Spartans return home to host the Buena Vista University Beavers on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.

Junior pitcher Megan Loes earned the two hit victory on the mound after facing 30 Dutch batters. She forced the Dutch into 10 flyouts and six groundouts and picked up three strikeouts. Meggie Schmidt led the Spartans offensively in game one with a 3-4 at the plate performance including an RBI. Hannah Koerperich went deep for the lone homerun in the game in the sixth inning with two outs to put UD up 3-0. The Dutch made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh after a couple of walks when they scored a run on one hit with one out. With bases loaded the Spartans ended the game on a double play at third and home to stop Central for their first loss of the conference season.

In the second game, it was the Dutch jumping out early and scoring three runs in the first inning on zero hits. The Spartans battled back and scored two runs in the top of the second on two hits and an error. UD tied up the game at the top of the fifth inning with one run on three hits. Andrea Smith doubled to right field. Kelli Gerace doubled to right field, RBI, and was thrown out at third rf to 2b to 3b; Smith scored on the play. Grunder singled to right field for the final hit of the inning.

The Dutch put the game away in the bottom of the sixth when they scored five runs on four hits and a Spartan error to re-take the lead 8-3. The Spartans last chance at the top of the seventh would strand two runners on base after three ground outs. Gerace led the Spartans offense going 2-4 at the plate with an RBI. Koerperich and Gianna Kuras would both finish 1-3 at the plate and each scored a run. Buena Vista will make the long drive across highway 20 after they split in Storm Lake against the Loras Duhawks on Friday afternoon, winning game one by a 5-4 score and losing the second 3-6.
