Atwater Extends National Lead at UW-Platteville Invitational

Apr 16, 2016

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Sophomore Tanasha Atwater won the shot put with a toss (14.51m/47-7.25) that leads the nation and crushed her previous best by nearly a foot at the UW-Platteville Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

No team scores were kept at a meet that featured numerous Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) schools and IIAC foes Wartburg and Loras.

Atwater tasted victory in the shot put for the second-straight week in impressive fashion. Her second throw allowed her to keep her national lead after a Trine (Ind.) thrower overtook Atwater’s mark earlier today. The Davenport, Ill. native is now 3-for-3 in shot put competitions this outdoor season.

Once again, the throwing contingent impressed despite an uptick in competition.

In Friday’s hammer throw competition, Atwater took home third (50.10m/164-4), followed by teammate Nicole Forson in fourth (48.69m/159-9). UD saw three Top-10 performances in the discus from freshman Rebecca Burmahl (38.95m/127-9) in sixth, freshman Shelby Lane in seventh (38.06m/124-10), and sophomore Abigail Willis (37.44m/122-10) in eighth.

Willis also placed fourth in the javelin throw (34.38m/112-9).

Junior Fabiola Ortiz led the UD on the track with her first victory of the outdoor season in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 11:29.38, breaking her previous school record by 0.49 seconds.

Sophomore Katrina Pagel added a ninth-place showing in the 400m hurdles (1:06.30) while freshman Isabella Solis placed sixth in the 100m hurdles (15.77).

The Spartans host the UD Invite next Saturday, April 23 at the Douglas J. Miller outdoor track.
