Brinker and Meyer Combine for 40 in Defeat to Beavers

Feb 3, 2016

BOX SCORE
STORM LAKE, Iowa - Junior Emily Brinker scored 22 points and sophomore Abbey Meyer added 18, but the University of Dubuque women's basketball team fell to Buena Vista, 85-56, on the road Wednesday night.

A tough shooting night kept the Spartans out of it after finishing 31.6 percent from the field, including a season-low 1 of 19 (5.3%) from the three-point line.

It looked good early on after UD jumped out to a 9-3 lead and trailed by three, 22-19, after the first quarter. The Spartans fell cold as the Beavers (12-8, 6-3 Iowa Conference) pulled away and went into halftime with a 50-27 deficit after outscoring UD, 28-8, in the decisive second quarter. Buena Vista's lead crept as high as 30 points in the third quarter.

Eighteen Spartans (6-14, 1-8 Iowa Conference) saw the court, but it was their Top-2 scorers that posted 40 of the team's 56 points. Brinker shot 9 of 16 from the floor with five rebounds while Meyer finished 4-for-12 shooting, but capitalized at the stripe with a 10-for-12 performance.

UD was efficient at getting to the line and canned 19 of 26 free throws, compared to 7-for-12 showing by Buena Vista.

The Spartans swept the Beavers in 2015, but Buena Vista flipped the script with their second win over UD this season. UD dropped to 19-51 in the all-time series.

UD will head to rival Loras College this Saturday, February 6 at 2:00 p.m. The Duhawks (14-6, 7-2 Iowa Conference) defeated Coe, 72-57, on Wednesday night.
