Martinez and Sablay Headline Tennis Trip to Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. - Sophomore Arantxa Martinez finished 5-1 for the Spartan women while sophomore Matthew Sablay won all three matches for the men during both teams' three-match Spring Break trip to Orlando, Fla.

Both teams faced Calvin College (Mich.), Western New England (Mass.), and Bethel University (Minn.).

Women
The women fell to Calvin, 8-1, Western New England, 6-3, and Bethel, 7-2.

Martinez won all three singles matches, including a three-set thriller, 6-7, 6-4, 10-8 in final match against Sydney Parkinson from Bethel. The IIAC Flight A Individual runner up in the fall teamed up with IIAC Flight C Champion, Marissa Joers, to go 2-1 on the trip at No. 1 doubles. The pair's only defeat was 9-8 after an 8-6 tiebreaker as they improved to 9-6 on the season.

Freshman Megan Ranney, coming off women's basketball season, earned the Spartans (1-13) other win at No. 4 singles against Western New England, 6-3, 6-4.

Men
The men fell to all three schools by the score of 8-1.

UD (2-11) was short a player for the entirety of the trip and saw Sablay earn all three wins for the Spartans. Sablay won at No. 2 singles, 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 against Calvin and 6-2, 7-5, versus Bethel.

Sablay and fellow sophomore Ranfer Hernandez defeated the pair from Western New England, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles. Sablay leads the team with a 6-7 singles record, including 5-4 at the No. 2 spot, and 3-6 record with Hernandez, primarily at No. 1 doubles.

The Spartan men are in their primary season and will face both Wartburg and Luther at their respective courts in their next contests on Saturday, April 9.
