Red Men Pull Away From Men's Lacrosse in CCIW Opener

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Carthage College scored 12 unanswered goals to pull away from the University of Dubuque men's lacrosse team, 16-3, in both teams' CCIW conference opener.

Down 4-1 in th second quarter, the Spartans (0-3, 0-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) scored a pair of man-up goals by freshman Mike Julius and junior Tyson Svoboda in the span of 16 seconds to pull to 4-3 at the 9:14 mark. The Red Men (2-2, 1-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) went on a 12-0 scoring run with nine goals in the final half to secure  the victory.

UD was outshot 44-15, but was efficient early on after scoring all three goals on their first five shots. Turnovers plagued the Spartans as they gave up possession 27 times compared to Carthage's 12 turnovers. Both teams combined to finish 24 of 31 on clears.

Julius paced the Spartans with two goals on two shots and junior Joshua Berey-Wingate won 12 of 23 faceoffs and collected a game-high 10 ground balls. 

Andy Szun and Jared Ferrell notched four goals apiece on a combined 18 shots to lead the Red Men.

The Spartans are back in action over Spring Break on Saturday, March 19 at 1:00 p.m. versus Kalamazoo College (Mich.).
