Spartans Overcome by League Leading Knights

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team played host to the #25-ranked Wartburg Knights and dropped both contests on Saturday 4-9 and 3-12. The Spartans were held to six hits in game one and seven hits in game two as the Knights scored nine runs on eight hits in the opener and 12 runs on 17 hits in the nightcap.

Dalton Garst and Austin McWhite would both finish with two hits and two RBI's Jacob Padilla took the loss on the mound after 3.2 innings and allowing six earned runs. He faced 22 batters and struck out four and walked four Knights.

The Spartans would leave six runners on base and committed two errors in the loss.

The Knights came out swinging in the the second game on Saturday and jumped out to a first inning lead 4-1. They would score in five of the nine innings and finished with 17 hits. 

Jared Clevenger led the Spartans offense with a pair of hits in three at bats. Jeremy Morski grabbed a pair of RBI's in his lone hit of the game. The Spartans score a run in the first, a run in the third, and a run in the seventh.

Dalton Garst suffered the loss as pitcher and would throw three innings allowing four earned runs after facing 17 batters. Derek Kornfiend came in for relief and threw 3.2 innings before alloing five earned runs and facing 20 batters. Nick Sewruk went the final 2.1 innings and allowed two hits and one earned run.

The Spartans continue the series on Sunday, April 17 at 1:00 p.m. Game one is a seven inning game while game two will be a nine inning affair.
