Strong Competition for Spartan Softball in Preparation for Rebel Spring Games

ROCHESTER, Minn. - The University of Dubuque softball continues to look for their first win of the season after facing top-ranked competition the past two weekends on the road. The Spartans fell to 0-6 overall, but have lost four out of the six contests by a single run. Saturday the Spartans lost to #25-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College by a 1-2 score and lost to Hamline University 2-3. 

The Spartans will welcome the warmth of Central Florida next weekend when they begin play in the 2016 Rebel Spring Games located in Kissimmee, Fla. (http://rebelspringgames.com/). Fourty NCAA Division III teams will take part in the games throughout the month of March. Iowa Conference teams playing in the Spring Rebel Games are: University of Dubuque, Central College, Coe College, Luther College, and Simpson College. The Spartans tentatively will play all their games at Osceola County Softball Complex (1900 Ball Park Rd. Kissimmee, FL 34741). Click here for directions/map

 The Spartans are being led offensively by Brianna Gyrion's .438 hitting percentage. She has seven hits in 16 at bats with 4RBI's, slugging percentage of .563, and an on base percentage of .500. Andrea Smith trails closely behind with a .333 batting average after collecting six hits in 18 at bats. UD has stranded 34 runners on base

Defensively the Spartans have turned a pair of double plays and have a fielding percentage of .956 with Tori Woltz at first base leading the team with 41 putouts. Spartan catcher, Courtney Markin, has thrown out two base stealers behind the plate.

The pitching staff has combined to throw 18 strikeouts and have just one wild pitch with a team ERA of 4.89 after allowing 56 hits and 27 earned runs. Pitcher Taylor Blair has a .311 ERA after appearing in three games an tossing nine innings.

The Spartans will play in the Rebel Spring Games from March 13-18 before hopping on a bus and returning home to Dubuque and play at Cornell College in a doubleheader on March 23.
