UD Student Catches Biggest Bass in Tournament

University of Dubuque angler Austin Brimeyer fished in deep water to catch the biggest bass of the 2016 BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship presented by Cabela’s.

A senior from Dubuque, Iowa, Brimeyer caught the 9.06 pound largemouth bass on Alabama’s Pickwick Lake during the two-day tournament held May 26-27.

“It was awesome to catch the biggest bass of the tournament on a lake we were unfamiliar with,” Brimeyer said. “We fished in deeper water than most people. This is typically what you have to do to catch bigger bass than normal, but you have to sacrifice the numbers of fish to get the size.”

He received a prize package worth over $2,000, including a Power-Pole Sportman Series anchor, two rods, two reels, and six Arctic Ice packs.

Brimeyer and his partner, UD junior Brian Goebel, of Gratiot, Wisconsin, caught 25.36 pounds of bass at the tournament. The students, who are members of the UD Fishing Club, placed 22nd out of around 150 college teams.
