Walk-off Defeat Spoils Baseball’s Season Opener

GREENVILLE, Ill. – The University of Dubuque baseball team dropped their season opener to Greenville College, 3-1, after a walk-off, two-run home run spoiled a strong start by senior Tyler Trifiletti.

Tied 1-1 going into the the ninth, the Spartans (0-1) were retired on three straight groundouts as Greenville took advantage with a two-run home run to break a five-game losing streak.

Senior starter Trifiletti kept the Panthers (1-5) at bay and allowed just three hits while striking out four in 7.0 innings of work. Greenville roughed up the Spartan bullpen for four hits and two runs while finishing with seven hits on the night.

UD’s offense struggled to string together hits and generated one run on nine hits. Centerfielder Eddie Pablo, 3B Dalton Garst, and SS Ryan Karrick each notched two hits.

Greenville starter Ryan Strohm gave up all nine hits with one earned run and struck out three in 7.0 innings. Only one Panther position player registered more than one hit.

The Spartans face the Panthers tomorrow, Saturday March 5 with a pair of nine-inning doubleheaders starting at 11:00 a.m. in Greenville, Ill.
