Wetherald’s Five Goals Leads to 15-4 Rout of Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa – Attacker Kelly Wetherald scored five goals for the second-straight game as the University of Dubuque women’s lacrosse team outshot Wartburg, 26-13, in a dominant 15-4 victory on Tuesday night.

Haley Shilts and Breann Tjaarda both added their first hat tricks of the season and teamed with Wetherald to score 11 of 15 Spartan goals. The trio outshot Wartburg (5-3) by themselves after attempting a combined 16 total shots.

Shilts converted all three shots while Tjaarda added a game-high three assists, two of them to Wetherald.

Wetherald, UD’s leading scorer with 14 goals on the season, is responsible for 10 of the Spartans 27 goals in the last two games, both wins.

The Spartans (3-1) utilized the trio early as UD got out to a 6-0 lead just 12 minutes into the game en route to a 9-0 advantage at the break. Wartburg cut the deficit to 12-4 midway through the second half, but the trifecta each scored one goal in the final five minutes to provide the 11-goal margin of victory, their second-largest of the season.

UD starting goalkeeper Kaley Weir (3-1) collected four saves.

Four different players scored one goal for the Knights in a game that was moved up from its originally scheduled date of March 24 due to impending weather.

UD improved to 2-0 in the all-time series against the Knights after defeating them 15-6 last season.

The Spartans host Concordia University-Chicago on Wednesday, March 23 at 5:00 p.m.
