Spartans Upend IIAC Leading Beavers

DUBUQUE, Iowa – With big performances from Jamaree Atwater and Jake Weber, the University of Dubuque men’s basketball team ran past the Buena Vista Beavers on Saturday night, 85-72.

After a hectic first couple of minutes, the Spartans settled down and found their game, taking a 7-6 lead off of a Jacob Mohlis three pointer, a lead that the Spartans would not relinquish for the final 35:14.TJ Lake seemed to find his rhythm again after returning from an illness, as he had 11 of his 14 points in the first half to help give UD a 45-34 lead going into the break.

The Spartans were able to build up that lead to as much as 19 at one point in the second half but the Beavers kept battling. Eventually the lead was cut to six points with 2:51 remaining in the game but TJ Lake responded by hitting a clutch three pointer with 2:01 left, for his only points of the second half and extending the UD back to nine. Jacob Mohils and Jake Weber both hit timely free throws down the stretch to help seal the victory for the Spartans.

After dropping 35 points on Wednesday night, Jamaree Atwater had another stellar evening as he finished with 25 points on 10-16 shooting in only 24 minutes. Jake Weber continued to be a dominant force as he had 16 points, while collecting 21 rebounds, nine of which were on the offensive end.  

UD’s bench stepped up on Saturday evening, as they outscored the Buena Vista Bench 27-16. 14 of which came from Lake, however Davon Beckert and Deonte Newsome combined for 11, with Jalen Jackson adding two. UD also led in second chance points by a total a 19-10.

The Spartans travel to Luther College in Decorah, Iowa on Wednesday night. Game time is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
