Baseball Routs Storm in Sweep

INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Spartan baseball team took advantage of the beautiful weather on Thursday afternoon and swept the Simpson College Storm by scores of 14-7 and 14-4. The Spartans racked up 34 hits in the doubleheader.

How it Happened
-Simpson built a 5-0 lead through five innings after the Storm scored two runs in the second and third inning and one more in the fifth. UD Cut the deficit to 5-3 in the top of the sixth after Kellen Mitchell singled to score Dalton Garst followed by a two-run home run from Will Doherty two batters later.

-The Spartans put up another three spot in the top of the eighth inning to grab a 6-5 lead. Dalton Garst and Jarad Clevenger both came up with RBI hits in the rally before Phillip Mallory stole home to cap it.

-Simpson evened the score the following half inning with a run of their own to make it 6-6 heading into the final frame.

-In the ninth, Kellen Mitchell began the scoring with a two-run single through the right side to regain the lead. Justin Jenson then followed Mitchell with a pinch hit, RBI double. Will Doherty and Jarad Clevenger continued to put the ball in play, bringing home runners with a sacrifice fly and a fielding error, respectively.  In all, the Spartans strung together eight hits and took advantage of three Storm errors to put up an eighth spot in the inning.

-Seven different Spartans had at least one RBI in the game one win.

How it Happened
-The Spartans carried the hot bats over from the first game, as they scored four runs before recording one out in the first. Jack Lasswell led off the game by getting hit by a pitch and the second batter of Dalton Garst drilled a two run home run. Will Doherty and Justin Jenson followed up the home run with a single and double to put runners on second and third for Ian Meyer. Meyer would come up with a single to right field to plate Jensen and Doherty for a 4-0 lead.

-UD began the scoring in the second just as they did in the first inning. This time it was Tyler Lewan with a solo home run. The Spartans would go ahead 6-0 after a single from Nasir Ricks, who was eventually scored on a fielder’s choice off of the bat of Justin Jenson.

-The Storm got back within striking distance in the fifth inning after making it a 7-3 ballgame. However, the Spartans responded with one run in the sixth from a Kellen Mitchell sacrifice fly and two runs in the seventh to blow the game wide open.

-The Spartans put the nail in the coffin in the eighth inning with three more runs. Nasir Ricks record his second hit of the game with an RBI double to right field and Will Doherty remained hot with a single to right field to score two Spartans.

The two victories move the Spartans to .500 this season with an 11-11 record overall and 7-2 in the Iowa Conference. The final game of the series is up in the air due to bad weather yet again this weekend. Please stay alert for updates.
