Baseball's Historic Season Comes to a Close

DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Dubuque baseball team won their first game of the day over North Central but fell to Concorida-Chicago in the nightcap to close the historic season with a 25-17 record.

How it Happened
-The Spartans jumped out front as they have done so many times this season when Jack Lasswell advanced Will Doherty to second on a single and scored on a Dalton Garst single to left field to grab the early 1-0 lead.
-The Cardinals evened things up in the top of the fifth inning when they scored one run on three hits and one UD error to make it a 1-1 ballgame.
-North Central scored a combined three runs within the fifth and sixth innings on five hits.
-UD would respond to the Cardinals in the sixth inning. The first three UD batters reached by a walk, hit and error to load the bases with no outs, when Tyler Lewan came up with a clutch triple  to clear the bases and scored a little league home run when the shortstop threw the ball away to give the Spartans a 5-3 lead.
-The Spartans would continue to tack on runs and match every Cardinal run. UD scored in the seventh on an RBI double off the bat of a Will Doherty and in the eighth when Cody Kramschuster singled up the middle to plate Justin Jenson and give UD an 8-4 lead.
-UD closer, Nathan Schneiderman came in and closed the ninth inning for the Spartans keep them moving on for one more game.

-The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the Spartans on two hits in the top of the second inning, including one run on a sacrifice fly.
-Concordia-Chicago expanded their lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth inning with a single through the right side to score two Cougar runs.
-The Spartans got their second base runner of the game and first since the first batter of the game, in the bottom of fifth inning when Jarad Clevenger singled up the middle but the Spartans were not able to get anything out of it.
-Thomas Kempf reached on a single up the middle in the seventh inning for UD’s third hit of the game but was later replaced by Tyler Lewan after a fielder’s choice and could not get a run across in the inning.
-UD put toghether one of their best rallies of the day in the bottom of the ninth. Justin Jensen lead off the inning with a home run to left field and Thomas Kempf followed with a single to left field. However, a double play ended the threat.

Notes
-Jack Lasswell tied the University of Dubuque school record for hits in a season with 60, after one against the Cougars in the nightcap. Dalton Garst finished one hit shy of tying the record with 59 hits in 2018.
-The Spartans end the season with a program best 25 wins.
