CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The University of Dubuque had three student-athletes earn Iowa Conference Player of the Week honors for the week of September 4th to September 10th. Alec Bass was named IIAC Male Athlete of the Week and Cross Country Male Runner of the Week.  Jenna Runde earned IIAC Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week and Arantxa Martinez was Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for their performances last week.

Alec Bass (Senior, Spring Green, Wis.) competed in his first event of the 2017 season and won the 2017 Les Duke Champion in a time of 24:55, five seconds better than the second place finisher. His winning time of 24:55 was four seconds off his NCAA All-American performance and personal record last year. This is Bass’ third Iowa Conference Cross Country Runner of the week honor in his career and sixth when combined with his track honors.

Jenna Runde (Junior, Elgin, Ill.) has been a key component in the Spartans 7-0 start, the best start for UD volleyball since 1982. This past week Runde helped lead UD to three victories, including a win in a five set thriller over #19 Cornell College. In the Spartans three wins last week, Runde earned her first career IIAC Volleyball Player of the Week honors by collecting 53 digs, averaging 4.42 digs per set and had five assists.

Arantxa Martinez (Senior, San Luis Potosi, Mexico) went 3-0 in singles play at the number one spot, picking up her 100th career win (singles and doubles combined) on Saturday with wins over Central and Simpson in route to her second straight IIAC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week Award. To go along with her three wins in her single matches, she also won all three doubles matches this week teaming up with Madeline Parker. She is now 7-0 in both singles and doubles in 2017. This is Martinez’ second IIAC Player of the Week honor this season and fifth of her career.
