Football Lose to Dutch in Final Game of 2017

PELLA, Iowa - Saturday's winner would finish second in the Iowa Conference, the University of Dubuque and the Central Dutch both wanted the victory and a 7-3 finish. UD would fight from behind all afternoon with the host Dutch holding the lead for a majority of the contest in a 21-38 Spartan loss at Schipper Stadium.

Central scored first and UD responded on a seven yard pass from Michael Briscoe to Emanuel Jenkins to tie the game 7-7. The Dutch used just 1:51 on six plays to score on a nine yard run to re-gain the lead 14-7. UD's Michael Joseph returning kicks for the first time this season, quickly showed his depth and ran untouched for a 96 yard kickoff return touchdown to tie the mage at 14-14 to end the first quarter. Central scored with 4:51 left in second to finish opening half with a 21-14 lead. 

UD held the opening drive of the Dutch in the second half to a field goal with 11:51 left in third. UD's Dwayne Allen Jr. scored on a four yard run at 6:05 of the third to cut the Dutch lead to just three points 21-24. The quarter would end with UD within striking distance as scored would stay at 21-24. 

The Spartans three drives in the fourth quarter would end with a turnover on downs, a fumble, and an interception as the Dutch would capitalize and on two of the three for a score to extend their lead to 38-21 with 5:04 left of the season. The victory moved the Dutch to second place in the IIAC standings with a 7-3 record overall and a 6-2 record in the IIAC. The Spartans end their season 6-4 overall and 4-4 in the IIAC, tied for fourth in the standings.
