Men's Basketball 2017-18 Awards Banquet

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's basketball team held their awards banquet this week and the coaching staff wrapped up the 2017-18 season. 

The Spartans finished 15-10 overall and 7-9 in the Iowa Conference including hard fought road wins at Buena Vista University, Simpson College, and Wartburg College, UD was the only team to capture wins this season at all three. The Spartans broke school records in three point shots made in a game vs. Rockford University on 11/22/17 with 19 in the 102-83 victory. The team attempted 680 from beyond the three point arc which was also a new school record as well as 262 three point goals made in a season. 

UD ranked 21st in the final NCAA statistics with 10.5 three point field goals made per game. In the IIAC, UD was first in defensive rebounds with 28.2 average, first in three point field goal defense at 32.8 and third in the league in three point field goals made with 10.5. The Spartans averaged 82.4 points a game and held their opponents to 77.8 points a game. The Spartans held a +1.3 rebounding margin and averged 39.7 rebounds per game.

Offensively T.J. Lake (Sr., guard, Peosta, Iowa/Western Dubuque H.S.) averaged 23.4 points a game overall and 22.8 points in conference action. He set a new school record during the season with a 50 point game on January 3, 2018 at Loras. He sank 12-20 shot attempts, was 8-12 from the three point area and a perfect 18-18 at the free throw line. Jamaree Atwater (Sr., forward, Moline, Ill./Moline H.S.) finished the year averaging 17.6 points a game and 17.1 points a game in conference play. Marcus McDaniel (Jr., guard, Roselle, Ill./Lake Park H.S.) was third on the team in scoring finishing with 10.9 points a game overall and 13.9 points in the IIAC.

“It was great to see the families and players and recognize some of the team and individual accomplishments our at our banquet," commented coach Robbie Sieverding. "Our staff was really proud of the way our team responded after a very rough start to conference play. We finished the year winning seven out of our last 10 games and had some young men earn valuable minutes during the second half of our conference season.”
