Men's Basketball Downed by League Leader

Box score vs. Buena Vista

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's basketball team struggled to get a bucket to fall the last couple of minutes in a 87-96 loss to the IIAC leading Buena Vista University Beavers on Wednesday night.

The Spartans missed some key baskets in transition after playing the Beavers even for most of the night. The game was tied at the half 47-47 with both squads shooting above 50% from the field and 100% at the free throw line. BV came out in the second half even hotter and would over shoot 60% from the field in the second half. BV was 35-63 from the field 55.6% and UD made 32-67 attempts from the field for 47.8%. UD led in three point goals made with 15 and BV sank 12. 

Fresh off a 50 point outing, the Iowa Conference Male Athlete of the Week, T.J. Lake would end the evening 12-25 from the field, 5-14 from the three point arc and 6-7 at the free throw line to finish with game high 35 points. His streak of consecutive free throws made was 24, ended shy of the school record. He started another streak and has two free throws in a row.

Deonte Newsome added 16 points in just 19 minutes of action. Jamaree Atwater added 15 points and Justin Smith collected nine rebounds to lead UD.

The Spartans travel across the state to face the Nebraska Wesleyan University Prairiewolves on Saturday, Jan. 13 in Lincoln, Neb. The road games continue as the Spartans travel to Luther College on Jan. 15 before returning home on Jan. 17 to face the Coe College Kohawks.
