Men's Basketball Suffers First Loss to #14 Wartburg

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's basketball team fell to 5-1 on the season after a 77-51 loss to #14 Wartburg College in the Iowa Conference opener on Wednesday night. 

After an even first seven minutes of action that saw the Spartans trailing by 16-13, Wartburg went on a run to build their lead to as large as 12 with 5:21 remaining until halftime. The Spartans closed the last 5:21 of the first half on an 11-3 run to cut the deficit and make it a 34-30 game at the break. Jamaree Atwater and Marcus McDaniel combined for over half of the Spartans first half points with 17 of the 30. 

Wartburg opened the second half on an 18-3 run to expand their lead to 17 and the Spartans could not get any closer than 14 points for the rest of the night. 

Atwater and McDaniel were the lone Spartans to reach double figures in scoring with 13 and 12, respectively. Atwater also led the team in rebounds with six in 23 minutes. 

UD struggled shooting from the field all night, hitting 20 of 74 shot attempts for 27% shooting. The Spartans were 6-16 (37.5%) from behind the arc in the first half but went cold in the second half, making just 1 of 11 and finished 25.9% from three for the game. UD was also only able to manage to get to the free throw line five times for the entire game, making four of them. 

The Spartans head to Pella, Iowa for their first conference road game at Central at 4:00 p.m. They return home on December 6th to host Simpson College.
