DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque women’s basketball team ran past the Central Dutch on Saturday afternoon, 79-62, and in the process Abbey Meyer became the 11th player in program history to score 1000 points.

UD jumped out of the gates firing, building a 5-0 lead and then a 10-3 lead in the opening four minutes. Central fought back and grabbed the lead two minutes later and would hold onto the lead for the remainder of the quarter but could not make it grow to more than five points. The Dutch scored the first four points of the second quarter to build that lead to eight points, which would be their largest of the day. The Spartans quickly responded, scoring the next nine points in less than one minute after three pointers by Abbey Meyer, Morgan Boer and Josephine Thomas.

The Dutch had a chance to take a lead into halftime, but missed a layup with 11 seconds remaining, Abbey Meyer raced the length of the court for a layup of her own that would fall just before the buzzer to give UD a 41-38 lead at halftime. The layup was also Meyer’s 1000th career point at UD.

UD slowly continued to build up their advantage, finally getting the lead to double digits with 3:43 left in the 3rd after a Madison Boer layup. That lead would only shrink to as little as seven points for the remainder of the contest. The Spartans attack never let up, forcing three Central players to foul out and one other player to commit four fouls.

Abbey Meyer led the Spartans with a game-high 23 points. Meyer was only 5-12 from the field but 3-3 from three and hit all 10 free throws that she attempted. Morgan Boer was right behind Meyer with 16 points and hauled in 11 rebounds for another double-double. Allison Roach was the third and final Spartan in double figures with 14.Those three accounted for 59 of UD’s 79 points.

Turnovers have plagued the Spartans all year but they committed only 12 on the afternoon, while forcing the Dutch into 25 turnovers. UD continued to force their way to the free throw line, taking 29 attempts and converting on 17.

UD is back on the road on Wednesday, traveling to Buena Vista. Tip is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in Storm Lake, Iowa.
