Second Half Rally Lifts UD over Monmouth

DUBUQUE, Iowa – After trailing for a majority of the first three quarters, the University of Dubuque men’s lacrosse team rallied and defeated Monmouth College, 7-4.

After Monmouth scored in the game’s first 19 seconds, UD would get goals from Davis Behrns and Michael Julius over the next four minutes to grab an early 2-1 lead. It looked like the game was set to become a shootout but both defense’s and goalies settled in after the opening five minutes. Monmouth would then go on to score the next three goals in the next 25 minutes to send UD into the break down 4-2.

The defense’s continued to dominate as none of the first seven shots of the third period would find the back of the net. With 3:30 left in the third, Kyle Mullins stopped a Monmouth shot, the Spartans then raced down the field and Ethan Senesac weaved his way through the Fighting Scots to score and make it a one goal game. Late in the third, UD forced a turnover that would lead to a Michael Jango goal with six second left in the third.

UD carried the momentum from the third quarter over to the fourth as they would take advantage of a Monmouth penalty and score a man advantage goal to grab their first lead since early in the first quarter. Michael Jango and Joe Furnstahl would tack on two goals in the final ten minutes to give UD some breathing room in route to running out the clock in the 7-4 win.

Kyle Mullins was fantastic in the net for UD, recording 12 saves over 60 minutes. Mullins held the Fighting Scots scoreless in the game’s final 32:43. UD’s defense stopped Monmouth on all three of their man advantage opportunities.

Michael Jango and Michael Julius each scored two goals for the Spartans. Jango also recorded two assists. The Spartans were successful on 16 of 17 clear attempts and grabbed 27 groundballs to Monmouth’s 21.
