Seven Spartans Earn All-Iowa Conference Honors

Nov 7, 2017

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced on Tuesday the 2017 women’s soccer all-conference teams. UD’s freshman defender, Carissa Brown, was voted IIAC Defensive MVP and a total of seven Spartans made the all-conference team.

Carissa Brown (Oswego, Ill./Owsego) headlined UD’s five All-Conference selections with her Defensive MVP honors. Brown was not the only UD freshman to make the list, as goalkeeper Victoria Roethler (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson) was also named to the all-conference team. There was only one other freshman to make the list.

After receiving honorable mention honors last season in her freshman campaign, Alexa Martin (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Prairie) grabbed All-Conference honors this season.  Juniors, Lauren Cangelosi (Clarendon Hill, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and Olivia Sullivan (Richland, Mich./Gull Lake) rounded out the all-conference team for the Spartans.

Sophomore, Amanda Chlebek (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) and junior Lexus Rose (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) were named honorable mention.

Brown, Roethler, Martin, Sullivan and Chlebek held down the defense that helped the Spartans defense pitch 10 shutouts in the regular season on the way to the number two seed in the Iowa Conference tournament. Roethler recorded eight of those shutouts for UD and played in 13 games this season and starting 11 games, recording 69 saves and only allowing six goals in 1154:22 minutes.

In her first year with the programs, Olivia Sullivan started all 15 games she played in and was third on the team with three goals on only eight shots. Cangelosi powered the offense and finished the regular season leading the Spartans with 17 total points, nine assists and tied for the most goals with four. Rose joined Cangelosi for a team high four goals this season and added one assists in her 14 games played.
